ICON Resin Infiltration

A conservative resin treatment for certain white spots and early enamel lesions.

Minimally Invasive Care

A Conservative Option for White Spots

White spots, early enamel changes, and the first signs of tooth decay can affect both the appearance and health of your smile. At San Diego Bay Dental in Chula Vista, CA, Dr. Madison Brown and our team offer ICON Resin Infiltration as a minimally invasive treatment for certain early enamel lesions.

ICON can help treat areas of porous enamel without drilling away healthy tooth structure. Our team carefully evaluates each tooth, explains your options, and uses digital imaging when helpful to determine whether ICON is appropriate for your needs.

What Is ICON Resin Infiltration?

ICON Resin Infiltration is a conservative dental treatment used for certain early, noncavitated enamel lesions and white spots on teeth.

Rather than removing tooth structure with a dental drill, ICON uses a low-viscosity resin that penetrates porous enamel. Once the resin fills these microscopic spaces and is hardened with light, it can help reduce further progression of an early lesion while also improving the appearance of some white spots.

Because ICON preserves healthy enamel, it may help patients avoid more invasive treatment when enamel changes are caught early.

Who Is a Good Candidate for ICON Resin Infiltration?

ICON works best for early enamel changes that have not developed into a full cavity. It may be appropriate for children, teens, and adults with certain white spots or early areas of decay.

White spots can develop for several reasons, including early tooth decay, changes related to fluoride exposure, or orthodontic treatment.

Dr. Madison Brown and our team will examine the affected area and, when appropriate, use digital imaging to evaluate the depth of the lesion. If decay has progressed too deeply or the tooth has developed a cavity, a filling or another restorative treatment may be recommended instead.

Can ICON Help With White Spots on Teeth?

ICON Resin Infiltration can improve the appearance of certain white spots by filling porous areas within the enamel. This can help the treated area blend more closely with the surrounding tooth.

Results vary depending on the cause, size, and depth of the enamel change, so not every white spot can be treated the same way. A dental evaluation can help determine whether ICON is a suitable option.

Does ICON Resin Infiltration Require Drilling?

One of the main advantages of ICON is that it treats appropriate early enamel lesions without drilling away healthy tooth structure.

The treatment also does not require anesthesia in many cases. This makes ICON a conservative option for patients whose enamel changes have been identified before they progress to the point where traditional restorative treatment is necessary.

What to Expect During ICON Treatment

ICON Resin Infiltration can often be completed during a relatively short dental visit.

The treatment generally includes:

  • Examining the tooth and confirming that ICON is appropriate
  • Isolating the treatment area
  • Applying an etching gel to prepare the porous enamel
  • Rinsing and drying the tooth
  • Applying the resin so it can penetrate the enamel
  • Hardening the resin with a curing light
  • Polishing the treated surface and checking the final result

Many patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately after treatment.

Does ICON Resin Infiltration Hurt?

ICON is designed to be minimally invasive, and anesthesia is often unnecessary.

During treatment, the tooth is isolated while the enamel is prepared and the resin is applied. The experience is generally similar to a routine dental appointment, although individual comfort can vary.

Our team will explain each step before treatment and answer any questions you have about what to expect.

What Results Can You Expect?

Cosmetic improvement may be noticeable soon after ICON treatment, although results vary depending on the type and depth of the enamel change.

By infiltrating porous enamel with resin, ICON can also help arrest or slow the progression of appropriately selected early lesions. Maintaining good oral hygiene and attending routine dental checkups remain important after treatment.

Our team can continue monitoring treated areas over time and discuss additional care if changes occur.

ICON Resin Infiltration vs. Dental Fillings

ICON and dental fillings are used for different stages of tooth decay.

ICON is intended for certain early, noncavitated lesions where the enamel surface can still be preserved. A dental filling is generally needed once decay has progressed enough to create a cavity or cause structural damage to the tooth.

Potential advantages of ICON include:

  • Preservation of healthy tooth structure
  • No drilling for appropriately selected lesions
  • No anesthesia in many cases
  • Treatment during a relatively short appointment
  • Possible improvement in the appearance of certain white spots

ICON does have limitations. It is not appropriate for all types of enamel defects or all stages of decay, and some teeth may require additional treatment in the future.
