Tooth Extractions: Gentle Care Close to Home

Careful treatment planning, clear explanations, and recovery guidance when a tooth cannot be saved.

Service Overview

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Tooth extractions can feel stressful, especially when pain or uncertainty brings you to the dentist. At San Diego Bay Dental, Dr. Madison Brown and our team provide tooth extractions in Chula Vista, CA, with a focus on comfort, clear communication, and careful treatment planning.

Before recommending an extraction, we evaluate the tooth and surrounding structures, explain your options, and answer your questions so you can make an informed decision about your care.

A tooth extraction removes a tooth that is too damaged or unhealthy to save. Dr. Madison Brown may recommend an extraction when a tooth has extensive decay, a severe fracture, an infection, or another condition that threatens nearby teeth or your overall oral health.

We use digital x-rays and the iTero Digital Scanner to evaluate the tooth, its roots, and nearby structures before treatment. Whenever possible, we also discuss alternatives that may help preserve your natural tooth.

Why Might a Tooth Need to Be Removed?

Removing a severely damaged or infected tooth can relieve discomfort and help prevent additional oral health problems.

A tooth may need to be extracted if leaving it in place could lead to worsening pain, infection, damage to surrounding teeth, or problems with your bite and jaw function. Our goal is to preserve healthy tooth structure whenever possible while recommending treatment that supports your long-term oral health.

Does a Tooth Extraction Hurt?

Local anesthesia is used to numb the treatment area before the tooth is removed. Dr. Madison Brown will make sure you are comfortable before beginning and can discuss sedation options when appropriate.

During your visit, we will review your digital images, explain what to expect, and answer any questions you have before treatment begins. After the extraction, we will provide detailed instructions to help you care for the area as it heals.

What Should You Expect During a Tooth Extraction?

Your visit begins with an evaluation of the tooth and surrounding structures. Dr. Madison Brown will review your digital x-rays and iTero Digital Scanner images and explain the recommended approach.

Once the area is numb and you are comfortable, the tooth will be carefully removed. Depending on your situation, stitches may be placed to support healing.

Before you leave, our team will review your aftercare instructions and discuss any recommended follow-up care.

What Is Tooth Extraction Recovery Like?

Proper aftercare supports healing and can help reduce discomfort after an extraction.

During the first 24 hours, avoid strenuous activity and follow the instructions provided by our team. You may be asked to replace gauze as directed to control bleeding and use ice packs in short intervals to help manage swelling. Take prescribed or recommended over-the-counter pain medication only as directed.

Contact San Diego Bay Dental if you experience persistent bleeding, increasing pain, fever, unusual drainage, or other symptoms that concern you.

Are There Alternatives to Tooth Extraction?

Whenever possible, we consider treatments that may help preserve your natural tooth.

Depending on the condition of the tooth, alternatives may include:

  • Crowns or onlays for fractured teeth that can still be restored
  • Root canal therapy when the tooth can be predictably saved
  • Preventive care and monitoring for smaller areas of concern

If saving the tooth is unlikely to provide a predictable long-term result or could lead to continued pain or infection, Dr. Madison Brown may recommend extraction.

What Happens After a Tooth Is Removed?

After an extraction, we will discuss whether replacing the missing tooth should be part of your treatment plan. Replacement may be recommended depending on the tooth, your bite, your appearance goals, and your overall oral health.

Our team will explain your options, including dental implant restorations when appropriate, and help you plan the next step.
